Overflow

At Overflow, our key focus is to amplify the work of nonprofits who are solving today’s most pressing issues - with the belief philanthropy should be accessible to all. Whether you give $1 or $1M, you can make a difference. In this guide, we outline one of the most pressing issues being solved by nonprofits today, with avenues provided to support and make an impact in the world. Our guide will help you put your money to work, where it’s needed the most.

The World’s Most Pressing Issue Today

Crisis in Afghanistan

Following the collapse of the Afghan state with the takeover by the Taliban, Afghanistan is at the onset of a massive humanitarian crisis. The people of Afghanistan are in need of support for emergency evacuation, relocation, and resettlement operations. Those especially vulnerable include women, human rights activists and defenders, educators, media workers, and ethnic minorities.

In an effort to provide protection and assistance to the people of Afghanistan, Overflow has curated a list of nonprofits addressing the medical and health services support, nutritional needs, including the provision of food and access to clean water, housing resettlement aid to refugees, and general assistance to charities on the ground in Afghanistan.

Ways Of Giving To Support The Causes You Care About

Stocks  Vs Cash

Many donors are wondering how to best give to the causes they care about. The most common method of donating to nonprofits is usually through Cash/Debit/ACH payments through a nonprofits website. However, cash is no longer king!

Enter stock donations. Donating stock is one of the most underestimated channels that enable nonprofits to maximise their fundraising potential and support their beneficiaries at scale by maximising the full donation amount.

What would you be willing to give if you knew that your donation wasn't coming out of your monthly grocery, rent or childcare budget? What if it came from the Overflow—your stock portfolio? While a $2500 donation from your checking account may feel significant, there is a reframing that occurs when donating from your stock portfolio. Are you giving a $2500 donation or are you giving (1) share of Google stocks that you've had for at least a year, on which you can avoid paying capital gains taxes and exempt the nonprofit?

Did you know?

  • Donating stock after it has appreciated in value for a year allows you to deduct the full appreciation value from your taxes and protects your realized gains from being subjected to long term capital gains tax, which can be up to 20% of the gains.
  • If you donate stock that has appreciated in value in less than a year, you can avoid up to 37% in short term capital gains taxes by donating that stock.
  • Nonprofits are exempt from capital gains taxes, so your stock donation allows the nonprofit to utilize the full amount of the donated funds.
  • Plus, you also can deduct the fair market value of the stock just like you would a cash donation when you itemize deductions in your next tax filing

This means you can save up to 20% in long term capital gains taxes and 37% in short term capital gains by donating your appreciated publicly-traded stock directly to your favorite nonprofit whilst maximizing the full donation amount to the non-profit. Thereby truly creating a win-win situation for both the nonprofit and donor!

Overflow makes it possible to donate appreciated stock and save on taxes, all while supporting the causes near and dear to your heart and making a difference in your community. Get in touch with our team if you're a nonprofit looking to diversify your fundraising capabilities.
