Nonprofit Spotlight: New Story

Unlike other housing non-profits, New Story doesn't just "build homes for the homeless" as this approach has long proved to be inefficient and unsuited for inclusive community-building. Each New Story project is based on three core principles:

New Story: No Place Like Home

Unlike other housing non-profits, New Story doesn't just "build homes for the homeless" as this approach has long proved to be inefficient and unsuited for inclusive community-building.

Each New Story project is based on three core principles:

  1. Inclusive Design
  2. All houses are designed with the feedback from the families who will live in them.
  3. Local Partnerships
  4. New Story works with local construction companies to ensure that houses are designed with all the climatic conditions in mind.
  5. Support Local Economy
  6. When building a house, New Story uses only locally-produced materials.

A Home That Takes 24 Hours to Print

Right at this moment, over 1 billion people have no access to housing or adequate shelter. Traditional construction methods failed to solve the homelessness crisis. Governments and non-profits failed to solve it either. To address global homelessness better and faster, New Story has been working on a breakthrough technology that makes it possible to build a house in just 24 hours.

In 2019, New Story announced that they were officially building the world’s first 3D-printed community. The first set of 3D-printed homes was based in Tabasco, Mexico, and featured 50 resilient, 500 square feet homes constructed by ICON, a construction technologies company, and ÉCHALE, New Story’s nonprofit partner in Mexico.

The members of the newfound 3D community came from an underprivileged indigenous population that had often been left out of the government programs. Born into extreme poverty, the families have now moved into their new homes that feature two bedrooms, a living room, kitchen and bath. Because Tabasco is often affected by earthquakes and tropical storms, New Story ensured that the houses were built with the highest safety standards and strong foundations that would make them last for generations.

Commitment to People, Transparency and Change

As a part of its commitment to transparency, New Story operates on a 100% model − you always know how exactly your donation was used and which family you helped. To make the giving process fully accountable, New Story separates all donations for homebuilding from their operational expenses and even their work in innovation.

Every dollar you donate to fund a home has a direct impact for a family in need. After you make a donation, you get to follow the New Story team every step of the way — you will receive frequent updates on the home building process and once the house is finished, New Story will introduce you to the family that will be moving into their new home.

While New Story is innovating how communities are built, Overflow is focused on innovating how communities give. With the help of our stock donation platform, we are building a world we all want to live in — a world where all people have access to education, healthcare and housing. However, such a world can only become possible if we fund it.

As a society, we don't have a shortage of solutions or resources, we simply need to help those with abundance to give out of the overflow.

What if we could inspire a whole community to give towards building another community? What if those with appreciated stock donated a part of it to help us build a world without homelessness?

That's possible now with Overflow.
